Listeria monocytogenes is a pathogen found in many environments such as soil, water, decaying vegetation and animals. It is a facultative anaerobe which can survive refrigeration and other types of preservation used in the foods and drinks industries.

Ingestion of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection notably in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.

L. monocytogenes can be transferred into the food chain when food is harvested / stored and can remain as a contaminant throughout the food production process. This requires continuous monitoring of raw materials, processed product, and the food production environment.

Listeria monocytogenes culture media plate

CompactDry LM is a ready-to-use, dehydrated chromogenic growth medium for the enumeration and detection of Listeria monocytogenes in food and drinks. In addition, CompactDry LM is used for monitoring surfaces and production areas in combination with CompactDry Swabs.

Listeria monocytogenes is detected by a combination of selective and chromogenic agents, resulting in red colonies with a blue halo.

CompactDry LM offers a rapid test for Listeria monocytogenes identification and enumeration. It has been certified through MicroVal according to ISO 11290:2017, part 1 and 2, and is widely used in the food & beverage industry.

Detection of Listeria monocytogenes through the combination of selective agents and chromogenic substrates.

Listeria monocytogenes form red colonies with a blue halo.

Red + Blue Halo

General protocol

Step #1
1

Remove the cap

Step #2
2

Dispense 1 mL of sample in the middle of the CompactDry plate

Step #3
3

The sample diffuses passively and evenly across the dehydrated media sheet, rehydrating the dry medium into a gel within seconds

Step #4
4

Replace the lid and label the plate

Step #5
5

Turn over the plate (lid down) and incubate for the appropriate time and temperature

Step #6
6

Following incubation, count the number of coloured microbial colonies
